History of Mid-State Machine
Mid-State Machine was formed in 1965 when Gerald Williams, Sr., bought the assets of a local machine shop. He grew his business using a strategy of a total focus on satisfying customer needs while maintaining the highest level of integrity. Early in the company’s history, he was approached by a manufacturer of paving equipment in a nearby town. That young business was looking for a supplier that could deliver on time, every time. Thus began a 30-year relationship that continues strong until this day.
The founder’s sons, Tim and Gerald Williams, Jr., began working in the family business in their twenties. Eventually Gerald, Sr. left active management of the company and the next generation took over the day-to-day running of the business in the late 1980’s.
Soon after its purchase, Mid-State Machine moved to its current location in Mt. Ulla, just next to Mooresville, NC. Starting from a small 10,000 square foot building, additions over time have increased the company’s current building to 105,000 square feet. Most of the company’s employees have long tenure with the company.
A cornerstone in Mid-State Machine’s strategy has always been to invest “ahead of the curve” in new machining centers. As a result, we have a young population of equipment, using some of the newest machining methods and technology. We are one of the country’s largest users of Mazak machines, which make up most of our equipment population. The president of Mazak even requested a personal visit to the “largest family owned Mazak shop,” and we continue to enjoy his yearly Christmas card.
In 2007, Larry Schwoeri led an investment in MSM and became CEO. Larry has successfully managed and grown contract manufacturers since 1989, satisfying customers in a wide spectrum of industries. Larry adds a commitment to continuous improvement and emphasizes putting the customer first at Mid-State Machine.
